Herkomst en achtergrond

Cultũra is an organic extra virgin olive oil from Arcadia, in the mountainous interior of the Peloponnese in Greece. The oil is made from 100% Choraitiki olives, harvested from ancient olive trees at an altitude of approximately 400 to 450 meters.

Production. With a production of approximately 400 bottles per year, Cultũra is a truly small-scale olive oil. Not anonymous bulk oil, but a small annual production from a single producer who takes her trees, soil, and oil very seriously.

The person behind Cultũra. Besides the olive oil itself, we also value the people and their story behind it. Cultũra is run by one woman: Labrini Tsitsou. She is an olive farmer and works as a diving archaeologist, specializing in coastal and underwater heritage, but also has a remarkably broad academic background.

Her education and professional experience include: a Bachelor's in Archaeology (University of the Peloponnese), Master Heritage & Interpretation (University of Leicester), Master Cultural Management – Panteion University (Athens), training in the production, use, and identification of jewelry – Gemmological Association of Great Britain, officially sworn translator Greek-English, and she holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Université Aix-Marseille.

And she is an olive farmer and makes amazing, organic, award-winning olive oil with a health claim! All by herself! Incredible. She only receives help during busy times, such as during the harvest.

The olives are organically grown, and Cultũra is BIO Hellas certified. The oil has also been independently tested for 195 pesticides and chemical residues, with no residues detected.

The taste is fresh, slightly grassy, and mildly spicy. Clearly fresh, vibrant, and rich in polyphenols, with a soft peppery finish. Cultũra is therefore accessible as a high-quality extra virgin olive oil.

Smaak & gebruik

Flavor. Cultũra is fresh, lightly grassy and mildly herbaceous, with a soft peppery finish. The oil is not extremely bitter or pungent, but it clearly has the character of a fresh, polyphenol-rich extra virgin olive oil.

Use. This oil is made for daily use, both in cooking and on its own.

Suitable for cold use
Yes.
Ideal over salads, vegetables, legumes, yogurt dishes and as a finishing touch on the plate. Due to its mild, herbaceous character, the oil does not overpower and truly shines when used cold.

Suitable for frying and roasting
Yes.
Suitable for daily frying and roasting at normal cooking temperatures.

Because it is a valuable oil with a high polyphenol content, many enthusiasts choose to use it primarily cold or lightly warmed.

Usage Tip
Do you want to preserve the polyphenol profile as much as possible? For example, for health benefits, use this oil neat, straight from the bottle with a spoon, or in cold preparations. Although the polyphenols make this olive oil extremely suitable for heating and the quality remains high, the total amount of polyphenols will partly decrease due to heating.

Kwaliteit & analyse

Cultũra won another Gold Award at the New York International Olive Oil Competition (NYIOOC) in 2026. This follows awards in 2024 (silver), 2023, 2021, and 2020. This makes Cultũra olive oil one of the best in the world, with its quality internationally recognized.

Cultũra is made from 100% Choraitiki olives from ancient olive trees in Arcadia. The olives are harvested at the beginning of November, which is an early harvest for this region. After picking, they are processed within 4 hours.

The oil is organically certified by BIO Hellas and has also been independently tested for 195 pesticides and chemical residues. No detectable residues were found in the report. This is consistent with an oil whose quality is not just promised, but also measurably substantiated.

The laboratory report states a total polyphenol composition of 616 mg/kg. For the official EU health claim, the relevant value is 8 mg of polyphenols per 20 grams of olive oil. This is well above the legal minimum of 5 mg per 20 grams.

The basic values are also strong. The acidity is 0.16%. This is well below the legal limit for extra virgin olive oil of 0.8%. Furthermore, the analysis mentions, among other things, 78 mg/kg oleocanthal, 82 mg/kg oleacein, and 298 mg/kg vitamin E.

In short: Cultũra doesn't need big words. Its quality is measurable: organic certification, recent harvest, low acidity, high polyphenol content, and no detectable residues in the pesticide test.

Gezondheidsclaim

With 8 mg of polyphenols per 20 grams of olive oil, Cultũra meets the requirements for the official EU health claim for olive oil polyphenols. This claim requires at least 5 mg per 20 grams of olive oil.

The claim states: olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.

That sounds like a biology textbook, but in plain language, it means that the polyphenols in olive oil act as antioxidants. They help protect your body against harmful daily influences, such as stress, air pollution, and normal aging processes.

Extra virgin olive oil and olive oil polyphenols are widely researched in relation to cardiovascular health, oxidative damage, inflammatory processes, and the Mediterranean diet. Cultũra fits well within this picture: an early harvested extra virgin olive oil with an exceptionally high content of polyphenols.

Veelgestelde vragen

Is Cultũra a very pungent olive oil?

No. Cultũra has clear character, but is not extremely bitter or pungent. The taste is fresh, slightly grassy and mildly herbaceous, with a soft peppery finish. If you are looking for an organic olive oil with polyphenols that remains very usable in everyday cooking, then Cultũra fits very well.

Why does Cultũra sometimes sting your throat?

That sting is characteristic of fresh extra virgin olive oil with natural polyphenols. Oleocanthal, in particular, can cause that peppery sensation at the back of the throat. In Cultũra, this sting is present but not extreme. It is a sign of fresh, well-made extra virgin olive oil.

Is the bottle suitable as a gift?

Absolutely. The dark glass bottle has a neat, classic look and is suitable as a culinary gift for someone who loves cooking, Greece, or good olive oil.

Do you have to take this olive oil pure for the health benefits?

No. There is no scientific evidence that a spoonful or two of olive oil on an empty stomach would be better than using olive oil as part of your normal diet. In fact, EVOO belongs with food. If you use olive oil with your meal, you also benefit from the role olive oil plays in nutrition. For more on this, see our page on Health and extra virgin olive oil.
