Extra virgin olive oil with health claim

Extra virgin olive oil with a health claim meets the criteria of the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). This means that the label may state that the polyphenols in olive oil contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress, provided that specified conditions are met.

This claim is laid down in European Regulation EU 432/2012 and may only be used when the content of natural polyphenols is sufficiently high, i.e. more than 250 mg/kg, and this can be demonstrated.

What does this mean in concrete terms?

  • the polyphenol content has been measured and controlled
  • the health claim has been officially approved
  • The effect applies with a daily intake of 20 grams of olive oil with at least 250 mg polyphenols per kilo.

Use in the kitchen

Olive oil with a health claim is used just like other extra virgin olive oil: for cold use and for cooking and baking. Use it as part of your daily diet to maximize its benefits.
