Herkomst en achtergrond

Holiston originates from a specific enclave in Kremasti. The Koroneiki olive trees grow here in mineral-rich soil, directly on the coast of Rhodes. The constant sea breeze forces the trees to produce an increased amount of protective polyphenols (antioxidants) and other bioactive compounds, to arm themselves against the salty air and the hot sun.

This specific terroir results in an oil with a complexity and purity rarely found in standard olive oils.

Holiston is produced in small, limited batches of 2,500 - 3,500 bottles per harvest. The olives are harvested early in the season (October) and cultivated with a holistic vision of health and science for maximum concentration of polyphenols (antioxidants) and other bioactive compounds that make extra virgin olive oil so special.

The result is an extra virgin olive oil with a very rich profile of bioactive compounds. With 1197 mg/kg of polyphenols (antioxidants), Holiston delivers almost five times the amount of active ingredients required by the European Commission for the official health claim.

This makes Holiston one of the most powerful natural products and therefore particularly interesting for those who use extra virgin olive oil consciously and regularly, and pay attention to polyphenols, origin and measurable quality.

The olives are certified organically grown. However, Holiston does not have an official organic certificate. Therefore, we do not call this oil organic.

The oil has been independently tested for pesticide residues. TÜV Austria checked for 613 chemical and synthetic pesticides, with no detectable residues. See the TÜV Austria PDF here with the results.

Holiston is a green, fresh, and non-greasy, characteristic olive oil for those who see extra virgin olive oil not only as a flavour enhancer, but also consciously choose polyphenols, origin, and measurable quality.

Smaak & gebruik

Taste. The taste is green, fresh and medium fruity (not too intense) with notes of fresh grass, artichoke, green tomato leaf and unripe almond.

The freshness, complex taste, medium bitterness and peppery tingle in the throat are characteristic of this oil. They come, among other things, from natural polyphenols such as oleocanthal and oleacein. In a high-phenolic extra virgin olive oil, this is a sign of an early harvest and a potent composition.

Use. This extra virgin olive oil is suitable for both cold and warm use. In our opinion, Holiston is best suited for cold use: over salads, bread, tomato, grilled vegetables, legumes, soup, fish, yogurt or toasted sourdough bread. This way, you'll taste its green, herbaceous character most clearly.

Can you use it for baking and roasting? Absolutely. The high polyphenol content is actually an advantage here. Holiston is unfiltered, but has been allowed to rest after production. As a result, natural particles have settled to the bottom, and the oil has been decanted clearly. This makes it different from a young, cloudy unfiltered olive oil. If present, do not pour the sediment at the bottom of the bottle.

For prolonged heating at very high temperatures, we would be hesitant. Holiston can withstand it, but the taste and aroma will be less pronounced.

Kwaliteit & analyse

With a Gold Award from the Dubai Olive Oil Competition 2026, and EVOO of the Year 2024 from the World Ranking Extra Virgin Olive Oil, the quality of Holiston has been internationally recognized. This makes Holiston olive oil one of the best in the world.

Regarding the analysis, Holiston has been analyzed by an independent laboratory for polyphenols, important natural compounds, and pesticide residues. See the photos for a report on the polyphenols from the laboratory.

In addition to the high total polyphenol content of 1197 mg/kg, the composition is also remarkable. Holiston contains, among other things, high levels of vitamin E and oleocanthal and oleacein, two natural, bioactive compounds that contribute to the recognizable bitterness and peppery pungency of high-phenolic olive oil.

The oil has also been tested for purity. TÜV Austria tested Holiston for 613 chemical and synthetic pesticides, with no detectable residues.

Gezondheidsclaim

Holiston easily meets the official EU health claim for olive oil polyphenols.

For this claim, not only the total polyphenol content counts, but specifically the amount of hydroxytyrosol and derivatives per daily serving. The legal minimum is 5 mg per 20 grams of olive oil. Holiston contains 23.94 mg per 20 grams!

The official claim states: olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.

That sounds like a biology textbook, but in plain language, it means that the polyphenols in olive oil act as special antioxidants. They help protect your body against harmful influences that affect you daily, such as stress, air pollution, and normal aging processes.

Extra virgin olive oil and olive oil polyphenols are widely studied in relation to cardiovascular health, oxidative damage, inflammatory processes, and the Mediterranean diet. Holiston fits well within this picture: a powerful, early-harvested extra virgin olive oil with an exceptionally high polyphenol content.

Veelgestelde vragen

Isn't Holiston too intense in flavor?
Everyone has their own taste, but Holiston is more medium than intense. It is green, slightly bitter and peppery. That is characteristic of this type of oil.

Why does Holiston sting my throat?
That tingle is normal. It is mainly caused by the natural polyphenol oleocanthal in the oil. In a high-phenolic olive oil like Holiston, this is actually part of its quality and taste.

Do you need to consume this olive oil purely for its health benefits?
No. There is no scientific evidence that a spoon or two of olive oil on an empty stomach would be better than using olive oil as part of your normal diet. More on this in Health and extra virgin olive oil.

Most people simply use it with food. For example, over vegetables, salad, soup, bread, fish, pasta or legumes. That is often much tastier, and the fat-soluble vitamins from, for example, vegetables are then absorbed much better.

How much Holiston do you need per day for the health claim?
The official EU health claim is based on 20 grams of olive oil per day. That is about two tablespoons. Holiston contains 23.94 mg of olive oil polyphenols per 20 grams, which is well above the legal minimum.

Can I bake and fry with Holiston?
Yes. Holiston is suitable for both cold and hot use. The high polyphenol content is actually an advantage for normal hot use, because polyphenols contribute to the stability of the oil.

But Holiston is unfiltered, isn't it?
That's right, but after pressing, the olive oil has rested in special tanks for a number of weeks. As a result, natural particles have settled to the bottom and the oil has been siphoned off clear. That makes it different from a young, cloudy unfiltered olive oil.

Is Holiston cloudy because it is unfiltered?
No, not necessarily. Holiston is unfiltered, but the oil has rested for several weeks in special tanks. This allowed heavier particles to settle naturally. Unfiltered here therefore does not automatically mean cloudy.

Is Holiston organic?
No. Or is it? Holiston is not officially organically certified as olive oil. The olive groves and processing are organically certified, but for an official organic designation, bottling and packaging must also be certified. That last step has not yet been completed.

However, Holiston is independently tested annually for pesticide residues. No residues were found in the most recent TÜV Austria test for 613 pesticides and other substances. So could you say yes? For now, we'll stick to no.

For whom is Holiston especially suitable?
For people who consciously choose a powerful, green extra virgin olive oil with many polyphenols. Not as a neutral cooking oil, but as a distinct oil at the table.

Do you need to consume this olive oil purely for its health benefits?
No. There is no scientific evidence that a spoon or two of olive oil on an empty stomach would be better than using olive oil as part of your normal diet.

In fact, EVOO belongs with food!
If you use olive oil with your meal, you also benefit from the role olive oil plays in nutrition. For more on this, see our page on health and extra virgin olive oil.
