Herkomst en achtergrond

Caixeiro Organic Bag-in-Box comes from the Portuguese family business Soresa in Trás-os-Montes, a protected PDO/BOB area in northeastern Portugal. The oil is made from traditional olive varieties from the region: Cobrançosa, Madural and Verdeal Transmontanas, by a producer who knows their craft.

This is an excellent, organic extra virgin olive oil at a low price per liter. Thanks to the bag-in-box, you pay less for packaging and more for oil. That's exactly the idea.

The bag-in-box belongs to the same Caixeiro Organic line as the 500 ml bottle, but it is not the exact same oil. The olives for the 500 ml are harvested slightly earlier. Due to a slightly later harvest, the olive oil in this bag-in-box is a bit milder and more accessible, perfect for daily use in the kitchen and at the table.

Use it cold over salads, bread, and vegetables, but also simply in the pan, oven, or stew. This is the kind of olive oil that easily makes you leave supermarket oil behind.

The olives are hand-picked and processed within 12 hours of harvesting. The oil is partially filtered, removing natural impurities without losing its character. The packaging protects the oil from light and limits contact with oxygen.

Smaak & gebruik

Taste. Soft, round, and approachable, with a lightly fruity character, mild bitterness, and a pleasant peppery finish. This oil is slightly softer than the 500 ml Caixeiro Organic, as the olives for the 500 ml are harvested a little earlier.

Use cold? Absolutely. Use this oil cold over salads, bread, tomatoes, grilled vegetables, pasta, soup, legumes, or potatoes.

Use hot? Absolutely! It's also widely applicable for hot dishes: for baking, frying, roasting, deep-frying, stews, and casseroles. Delicious for cooking your meat, fish, or vegetables, just like in all Mediterranean countries.

Kwaliteit & analyse

Affordable doesn't have to mean bland or anonymous. This Caixeiro is particularly interesting because it combines a low price per liter with things you DO want to know about olive oil: where it comes from, who makes it, how it's processed, and how it's packaged.

The olives are harvested by hand and processed within 12 hours of picking. The oil is partially filtered and packaged in a bag-in-box that protects against light and limits contact with oxygen.

This makes it an everyday EVOO that you can use generously, without having to compromise on origin, character, and basic quality. You know where the oil comes from, who makes it, and how it's processed.

In short: an affordable everyday EVOO, but one with origin, character, and care in its production.

Veelgestelde vragen

Isn't a bag-in-box a bit inconvenient?

Certainly not! The bag-in-box has a very convenient spout that allows you to fill a bottle, for example. You can then store the bag-in-box in your kitchen cupboard to keep it cool, and use the filled bottle in the kitchen and on the table.

Is 2 or 5 liters not too much for home use?

Not if you truly use extra virgin olive oil. For salads, bread, vegetables, pasta, baking, frying, oven and stew dishes, it goes faster than you think. Olive oil is a fresh product, so only buy this if you frequently use good olive oil.

When should I choose 2 liters and when 5 liters?

Choose 2 liters if you want to try Caixeiro first or if you have a smaller household. Choose 5 liters if olive oil is truly a staple in your kitchen. It's the same oil, just in a larger package. The price per liter is usually more favorable with 5 liters.

On average, a 5-liter box lasts our customers with a family of 4 people for about 5 to 6 months. Ergo, a 2-liter box will last approximately 2 months. This is a rough estimate and entirely dependent on actual daily use.

What is the advantage of a bag-in-box?

A larger package is more economical. Additionally, a bag-in-box protects your olive oil well against light and limits contact with oxygen. The bag inside the box empties under vacuum, meaning less air comes into contact with the oil than with a bottle that gradually empties. This is not only convenient, it's very good because your olive oil stays fresh longer.

Is this oil cheaper because it's of lower quality?

No. The lower price per liter is mainly due to the larger size and clever packaging. You pay less for glass, labels, and individual bottles, and more for what you actually want: good organic extra virgin olive oil.

Is this an alternative to supermarket olive oil?

Yes, that is indeed the intention. This Caixeiro is soft, well-rounded, and accessible enough for daily use, but has more character than many bland supermarket olive oils. A good EVOO at a price where you really dare to use it.

Can I use this olive oil cold?

Yes. Use it over salads, bread, tomatoes, grilled vegetables, pasta, soup, legumes, or potatoes. You can also simply put it on the table.

Can I bake and fry with this olive oil?

Yes. Extra virgin olive oil is suitable for normal warm use. You can therefore use this Caixeiro for baking, frying, roasting, oven dishes, and stews. You can read more about cooking with extra virgin olive oil in our knowledge center.

Can I also deep fry with it?

Yes, you can. Good extra virgin olive oil handles heat better than is often thought. Deep-frying is still deep-frying, of course, so we don't highlight it as a primary use. But the idea that extra virgin olive oil should only be used cold can truly be thrown out. You can find more explanation about this in our knowledge center.

Is this the same oil as the Caixeiro Organic 500 ml bottle?

No, not entirely. The oil comes from the same producer and from the same Caixeiro Organic line, but the olives for the 500 ml bottle are harvested a bit earlier. As a result, the 500 ml is somewhat fresher and greener. The bag-in-box is slightly softer, rounder, and more accessible for daily use.

How do I best store the bag-in-box?

Store the box in a cool, dark place. Not next to the stove, not in direct sunlight, and preferably not in a warm utility room. The packaging protects well against light and oxygen, but heat remains no friend to olive oil.
