Herkomst en achtergrond

This basil olive oil is made by Il Bottaccio in Tuscany. Il Bottaccio has been making olive oil for generations, and for this oil, they use a combination that immediately feels Italian: extra virgin olive oil and fresh basil.

Basil and olive oil have long been a staple of Italian cuisine. Think of Pesto alla Genovese, which combines basil, olive oil, garlic, cheese, and pine nuts. The modern pesto as we know it today was already described in Genoa in the 19th century, but the combination of finely chopped herbs, garlic, and olive oil is even older.

For the concentrate, Il Bottaccio uses the Contemporaneo method: fresh basil and olives go into the mill together. This concentrate is then mixed with extra virgin olive oil. This gives the oil its fresh basil scent directly from the herb itself.

Smaak & gebruik

Taste. Fresh, green, herbaceous, smooth and well-rounded, with a clear basil presence.

Use it cold or add it just before serving. Traditionally used in Italy with:

  • Insalata caprese - tomato, mozzarella, basil and olive oil
  • Pesto - basil, olive oil, garlic and cheese (Parmigiano Reggiano and Pecorino Romano)
  • Panzanella - Tuscan bread and tomato salad
  • Bruschetta - classic Italian appetizer

Does basil oil also go well with Dutch dishes?
Yes. For example, use it over boiled potatoes, green beans, cauliflower, tomato soup, fried fish, omelets, potato salad, etc.

For hot dishes, it's best to use it at the end. A few drops over warm pasta, soup, grilled vegetables or chicken immediately provide that recognizable basil aroma. Heating it in the pan is less logical, as the fresh herbaceousness would then dissipate more quickly.

Kwaliteit & analyse

The quality here lies mainly in the composition of the product: 100% Italian extra virgin olive oil and real basil, for a basil oil made by Il Bottaccio itself.

As a result, the basil is not just added as a flavouring, but truly absorbed into the oil.

Store tightly closed, in a cool and dark place.

Veelgestelde vragen

What is basil oil?

Basil oil is extra virgin olive oil infused with basil. This Tuscan basil oil from Il Bottaccio instantly gives dishes a fresh, green basil aroma.

Where does the basil flavor come from?

For the concentrate, Il Bottaccio uses the Contemporaneo method: fresh basil and olives are milled together. This concentrate is then mixed with extra virgin olive oil, ensuring the basil truly infuses the oil.

What do you use olive oil with basil for?

For Caprese, tomato, mozzarella, burrata, salads, panzanella, bruschetta, pasta, grilled vegetables, fish, chicken, and bread. A small amount is often enough.

Can I cook with it?

It's best to use this oil cold or add it just before serving. Extra virgin olive oil can handle normal warm use well, but with this basil oil, you want to preserve its fresh, herbal aroma.

Is this useful if I often eat tomato, mozzarella, or pasta?

Yes. This is exactly the kind of bottle that quickly becomes indispensable. A few drops over tomato, mozzarella, burrata, pasta, or bread immediately provide that fresh basil aroma.

Is this the same as pesto?

No. Pesto usually contains basil, olive oil, cheese, garlic, and nuts or seeds. This oil is much simpler: extra virgin olive oil with basil. This makes it easier to use as a final drizzle over a dish.

How do I store this basil oil?

Store tightly sealed, in a cool, dark place. Not next to the stove and not in direct sunlight. Use it often, as this will best preserve the fresh basil aroma.
